This introductory training is one of the all-day pre-conference sessions of the Washington School Counselor Association Conference. The training is intended primarily for educators. Below is a description of the event from the published promotional materials.

Core MI Training

During this four-week online workshop, participants will learn: the fundamentals of motivational interviewing, the core OARS strategies of the motivational interviewing process, ways to identify and elicit change talk, as well as strategies for exploring and resolving ambivalence. The learning process is varied across several modalities, to maximize your opportunity to familiarize yourself with motivational interviewing as it can be applied in your practice.

This two-day training will discuss an effective approach in the treatment of challenging clients, and provide participants with an opportunity to explore creative ways of integrating these approaches into an effective therapeutic intervention -- when to use, when not to use Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.

The training is primarily focused on the discussion and application of the “Spirit and Processes” of MI. Motivational Interviewing (MI), first described by William Miller (1983), and later elaborated in the classic book—Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People for Change (1991, 2002, 2014)—offers a practical, evidence-based approach for supporting clients in making and sustaining healthy behavior changes.  Originally developed in the drug and alcohol field, over 300 clinical trials demonstrate the efficacy of MI across a range of populations, target behaviors, and medical conditions.  In particular, MI has been shown to be especially effective in brief clinical encounters
