So... you have taken basic training in Motivational Interviewing, but feel like you aren’t yet fluent in MI?

This Level 2: Skills Lab Intermediate course is all about skill practice and integration! Experiential education--We learn best by doing! A significant amount of each session will be spent in actually doing or observing skills practice. You’re gonna complete this course with more confidence in your ability to ‘speak MI!’

If you've been trained in Motivational Interviewing, and have an understanding of the spirit, skills and strategies of the approach, and would like an opportunity to improve your MI use through practice and feedback, you are welcome to attend our MI Skill Development Groups. Each month, we gather to consider some aspect of MI through the lens of our shared expertise, and then practice with one another, doing our best to provide each other with helpful feedback.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to: Identify seven types of change talk; Utilize strategies to resolve client discord; Progress through an MI-style of conversation using four tasks: engaging, focusing, evoking, planning; Identify when to counsel with neutrality (equipoise); and demonstrate MI skills through practice dyads.

You're ready for the intermediate level if you're already familiar with concepts like ambivalence, change talk, sustain talk, and the OARS skills.
