Dr. Starks is a licensed clinical psychologist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Hunter College. He conducts research on the development of behavioral interventions to reduce drug use and HIV infection risk with a particular focus on couples. He has served as a trainer, supervisor and interventionist in multiple NIH-funded clinical trials testing individually delivered MI. As a primary investigator, he has led the development of novel extensions of MI for use with couples. These interventions have integrated elements of cognitive behavioral therapy -- in particular video based modeling -- to enhance relationship skills relevant to MI processes.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Hunter College. I have been involved in the delivery, supervision and training of MI for over a decade. This includes extensive experience with MI delivered in the context of randomized controlled trials and also in health care and community-based organizations. I aim for trainings to be fun and informative spaces for actual skill development. With preparation and an open mind, the expertise of trainings and the core concepts of MI can be brought together to yeild knowledge and skills with immediate practical value -- provided we can find time to give ourselves permission to practice.
