I am the Director of the Behavioral Health Clinic in a large Regional Hospital in Minnesota. Our healthcare system, CentraCare Health, now includes a basic motivational interviewing introduction as part of the physician onboarding process. Behavioral Health providers complete a two-day MI training and many go on to complete eight 2-hour skills classes. It is our goal to provide MI training to medical home coordinators as behavioral health becomes more integrated into primary care, and the focus of healthcare moves toward improving outcomes and lowering the total cost of care.
Many hospitals and healthcare clinics recognize the value of providing training in Motivational Interviewing as part of the physician onboarding process and as a core skill for psychologists, psychotherapists, and other healthcare providers. By learning how to recognize, respond to, and elicit change talk, MI becomes an essential skill as healthcare moves toward improving patient outcomes and lowering the total cost of care. As a trainer and member of MINT, I provide 2-day introductory trainings and eight 2-hour skills classes.
