Lisa Stockwell, M.Ed. is a Health Educator, Creative Life Coach and Master Trainer in Stanford’s Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. As an experienced presenter and educator, Lisa is especially interested in the issues related to working with clients on the management of their chronic conditions. Lisa teaches Communicating Mindfully classes at Concord Community College. She believes that the style of the conversation is essential in helping a client move toward health behavior changes that will improve their quality of life. Asking people to tell you their story can provide a more authentic picture of their life. Truly listening to their personal story is the strongest way to engage and to build relationships.
I believe in teaching the spirit aspect of MI. When we incorporate the MI spirit into our practice and truly listen to a client’s story, truths can be uncovered that may be difficult to surface in other ways. Patients' stories provide context, allowing us to create meaning out of complexity and confusion. We are the story gatekeepers; we listen holding their story, letting it transform and become alive with the hope of change.
