Since beginning to code and coach Motivational Interviewing (MI) in 2006, I have had the privilege of walking alongside thousands of clients as they become proficient in their MI skills.
I create customized, highly interactive trainings for each organization I work with, and I incorporate plenty of skill practice that is tailored to each organization's particular context. I'll invite you and your attendees to provide me with relevant communication scenarios in advance, and then design the training around your unique needs and schedule. My goal is for participants to go back to work after the training and actually apply what they've learned. And when spontaneous scenarios or applications arise during the training, I will address those, too! I love when people ask questions during my trainings or become curious about "what MI would do" in specific situations.
I can facilitate a 1-hour Taste of MI workshop up to a 2-day Advancing the Practice training, and anything in between. I particularly enjoy facilitating small group trainings via Zoom -- breaking the relevant content down into small, easily digestible bites and delivering it over a period of weeks or months. Typically each session lasts 75-90 mins, with at least a week between sessions so we can debrief the participants' experiments with the new strategies they've learned. Organizations often find that spreading the content delivery out over time boosts attendance, skill retention, and practical integration.
Additionally, I offer in-depth post-training coding (MITI and MICA) and coaching to help participants integrate what they've learned into their individual style and the context of their day-to-day interactions.
Individualized personal instruction in MI is available by phone or Zoom to graduate students or professionals. I will meet with you weekly or on a schedule that suits your needs and customize the curriculum and experiential exercises for your specific context and application.
Finally, I provide training design and consultation services to independent and in-house trainers seeking to develop or refresh their MI training offerings.
I've recently trained professionals in the fields of corrections, education, management, law, social services and health care, including:
