More About Me

About Me

Training/teaching MI in a variety of venues for nearly 25 years, I continue to learn new things about MI and about teaching/training! I mainly train/teach MI for use in addictions or addiction-adjacent areas (ie, hospitals, CJ systems, educational environments) I have also been well trained in other compatible modalities: Solution-Focus Therapy, CRAFT, Harm Reduction Psychotherapy, CBT, Nutritional Healing, Tapping, Relapse Prevention, Trauma-informed work, Brainspotting, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and more which I believe helps me to demonstrate well the 8th Stage of Learning MI:  Blending MI with Other Practices!

I recently joined the faculty at St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA, where I am Adjunct Associate Professor in the Graduate Counseling Department. Currently I teach a course in Substance Use Disorders.  Further, I maintain a private practice in Emeryville, CA, focused on using MI and other client-centered, somatic, and evidence-based practices to help others make change(s) in their lives, explore their relationship to drugs including alcohol, and improve communication in families.   I have been honored to make contributions to 2 of the "family" of MI books through Guilford Press as well as other books in the field and more.  I am also the author of the book, “Coming to Harm Reduction Kicking and Screaming: Looking for Harm Reduction in a 12-Step World." Finally, I have conducted nearly 1000 presentations, classes, trainings, keynotes, and workshops on MI and other evidence-based practices/topics for groups as diverse as Cornell University to San Francisco AIDS Foundation to numerous County Behavioral Health Services throughout California and beyond where I am well known for my wicked sense of humor and ability to keep audiences awake!
