I began working with MI in a research capacity (mainly though not exclusively in healthcare contexts) and have continued to do this both nationally and internationally since 2001. My work to date has also focussed on working alongside health professionals to develop their services and integrate MI skills into their daily work. I have several publications resulting from this work, and have authored several book chapters on MI. Additionally, I worked in a voluntary capacity with clients with anxiety disorders, and also provided emotional support to individuals in distress and despair (including those with suicidal feelings) for many years. Having a background in MI certainly helped my work in these areas.
I am currently working as a clinical psychologist in physical health contexts (presently these include cardiac rehabilitation, bariatrics and specialist weight management), where I use MI in my practice along with many other psychological approaches to help with behaviour change. Additionally, I have many years experience of working in a wide variety of mental health contexts, including psychiatric liaison.
I have been a member of MINT since 2005, when I completed my TNT in Amsterdam. I very much enjoy delivering MI training, and have provided training to practitioners working in a variety of health contexts including substance misuse, diabetes management, children and families, coronary heart disease, sexual health, primary care, dentistry, mental health and clinical psychology. I am based in Gloucestershire, but am happy to travel anywhere in the UK for the purposes of training (dependent on other work commitments).
I am able to offer a wide range of MI training activities, dependent on the needs of your organisation, ranging from introductory worshops, to supervision, reflective practice and skills development. Please feel free to contact me if you would like more information, or are interested in accessing some MI training.
