More About Me

About Me

I am a Licensed Psychologist in New York and Georgia. In 2006, I received a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Lehigh University. I completed a pre-doctoral Clinical Psychology internship at the Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System in East Orange, New Jersey (VISN 3). I completed a 3-year clinical and research Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Health and Addictions Psychology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY.

In 2005, I received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research to fund her research training (Funded by National Institute on Drug Abuse[NIDA]). My research activities have focused on the development of novel, feasible, and acceptable adaptations of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in non-traditional settings (i.e., telephone, primary care clinic, inpatient medicine wards) targeting individuals with substance use disorders and chronic medical illness. I received training and supervision in MI as a study therapist for 3 NIH clinical trials targeting adults with chronic pain, adolescents and adults with prescription opioid non-adherence, and adults with substance use disorders who needed a liver or kidney transplant.

Currently, I own a private practice, Bethea Consulting & Psychological Services, P.C., located in Atlanta, Georgia. I specialize in delivering evidence-based interventions to treat problematic substance use, substance abuse and dependence, depression, anxiety, childhood behavioral disorders, weight loss, chronic pain and illness management.

I perform psychological evaluations with professional athletes. I offer MI workshops and coaching for health care providers (e.g., physicians, nurses, health educators, social workers, peer recovery specialists, psychologists, addictions counselors, drug court counselors), and provide program development consultation for treatment settings interested in development behavior change protocols for patients.

I am a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the APA Minority Fellowship Program, the Georgia Psychological Association (Fellow), and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. I formerly served Chair of the ASRM Mental Health Professionals Group Task Force for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
