I am a Professor at the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University where I direct the S.E.L.F.-Regulation Lab (http://self-regulationlab.fiu.edu). My research focuses on the role of children’s self-regulation as it pertains to School Readiness, Early Intervention, Learning, and Fitness (S.E.L.F.). A large portion of my work focuses on how individual differences in behavioral and biological aspects of self-regulation influence children’s adaptive functioning, and how psychosocial interventions (e.g., Parent Training, Summer Treatment Programs) influence or moderate the impact of regulatory processes on adaptive functioning outcomes (e.g., school readiness, social-emotional functioning). My work has been supported by both federal grants (IES, NIMH, NIDDK) and local agencies. I have over 15 years of experience integrating MI across numerous clinical intervention projects. In addition to providing MI trainings to community mental health counselors, I also conduct yearly MI trainings at Florida International University to all incoming mental health counseling graduate students.
