Mary completed her MINT training of trainers in 2008, and she completed the MIA-STEP program for supervision of motivational interviewing in 2010. These two trainings provide expertise in offering trainings to groups (MINT TNT) as well as supervision to individuals - tape review and coaching - (MIA-STEP) to gain competence in MI. Mary earned her PhD at Oregon State University in counseling. Her original research includes using motivational interviewing for relationship wellness checkups (programs designed to prevent relationship distress). Mary completed her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Naropa University and she holds post-graduate certificates in Marriage and Family Therapy and Sex Therapy, with a specialization in GRSM couples and families.
Mary combiners her experience with motivational interviewing, with additional areas of interest. She has been a Board Certified Clinical Sexologist with the American Board of Sexology since 2006, and she is certified with AASECT (the American Association of Sex Educations, Counselors, and Therapists. Mary has been working as a counselor - starting with peer counseling then through her MA and PhD programs, since 1995. She has been an educator since 2003. She is passionate about motivational interviewing for all levels from beginning counseling students to advanced practitioners.
Mary has provided training and supervision (including tape review and feedback) in motivational interviewing for clinicians (psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, sex therapists and others) as well as teachers, psychosocial rehabilitation/mileu staff, parole and probation officers, emergency service personnel/first responders such as paramedics, and others. She has taught basic and advanced trainings in continuing education as well as Bachelor and Master level counseling students. She uses MI in her clinical practice evrey day - and uses her work in her trainings to discuss challenges, barriers, successes, and nuances of MI in application in the office. She has worked in mental health, drug and alcohol, psychiatric care, and family/relational health in both treatment and prevention and in a range of intensity of levels of care - from residential, intensive outpatient, and outpatient - and with kids, teens, and adults.
