Trainer Statement

Since beginning to code and coach Motivational Interviewing (MI) in 2006, I have had the pleasure of walking alongside over a thousand clients as they become proficient in their MI skills.

I enjoy designing customized, highly interactive trainings for each organization I work with, and I incorporate plenty of skill practice that is tailored to each organization's particular context. I'll invite you and your attendees to provide me with some specific communication scenarios in advance, and then design the training around your unique needs.

I specialize in small group trainings that foster deep collaboration and skill integration. My goal is for participants to gain enough confidence to go back to work after the training and actually apply what they've learned.

I also provide in-depth post-training coding (MITI and MICA) and coaching to help participants integrate what they've learned into their individual style and the context of their day-to-day interactions.

Individualized personal instruction in MI is available by phone and in person to graduate students or professionals. I will meet with you weekly or on a schedule that suits your needs and customize the curriculum and experiential exercises for your specific context and application.

I've recently trained professionals in the fields of corrections, education, management, law, social services and health care, including:

Probation, parole, community corrections, juvenile detention, and correctional institution managers, supervisors and staff

Faculty development in higher and secondary education, school leadership teams, deans, counselors, teachers, school nurses, and other staff

Parent/family mentors, family home visitors, child protective services, special advocates

Conflict resolution, alternative dispute resolution, collaborative law

Divorce and joint custody mediation, parenting coordination

Health educators, primary care providers, counselors, and rehabilitation professionals

Food pantry, restorative justice, and other community assistance program volunteers

Nonprofit leadership, staff, and volunteers

Participants also tell me they find MI skills very useful with their friends and families, including their children and teenagers!
