Advanced Motivational Interviewing:

Guiding Therapeutic Change with a Client-Centered Approach to Transforming Ambivalence

Motivational Interviewing (MI) as an evidence-based practice used in the effective treatment of addiction, substance use problems, and many other types of behavioral change is an important skill set that is developed and deepened in this advanced class. Advanced MI begins with a brief review of the fundamental spirit, principles, and skills taught in the basic MI training. The remainder of the class then focuses intensively on clinical skills development. The training is designed to assist the counselor to develop and practice skills to assist clients in identifying and strengthening their intrinsic motivation for positive change. Because this is an advanced course in MI it is expected that all participants are able to demonstrate the foundational MI skills by conducting a client interview using the OARS micro-skills and also responding effectively both to change talk as well as to sustain talk (ambivalence). The format is interactive and experiential in nature. Participants are afforded an opportunity to obtain focused practice and to receive individualized feedback regarding their MI skills with student and trainer ratings. There is also a brief introduction to the Motivational Interviewing Assessment: Supervisory Tools for Enhancing Proficiency (MIA-STEP), a powerful resource designed for the use of MI as a supervisory tool.

Participants in this Colorado Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) Approved training learn: 1) to verbalize a working definition of MI and the roots and principles of the MI framework; 2) to determine the stage of readiness for change by interviewing clients regarding their attitudes about change, their intentions to change within the next month, and their past efforts to change; 3) to explore both sides of clients’ ambivalence about change; 4) basic MI strategies including OARS; 5) the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to change talk (EARS); 6) to utilize the MI skills to include the use of change talk by evoking motivation to change, using complex reflections, developing discrepancies, exploring ambivalence, and eliciting self-motivational statements; 7) to decide whether and how to initiate change plans with clients; 8) to demonstrate an understanding of MI Skills coding; 9) the role of clinical supervision in skill development in an integrated care environment; 10) the use of core MI skills to facilitate integrated care communication and collaboration; 11) to exhibit instructor rated MI skills with a minimum score of 4 in an Adherence and Competence; and 12) to integrate the MI skills of active listening and reflection to empower inter-professional communication on the integrated healthcare team with consumers, family members, and other providers.

 

NOTE: This training is approved by the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) for CAC/LAC credentialing with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). The training may also be taken independently of pursuing CAC/LAC credentialing as well as for general CE/CPD contact hours.

 

Ryan Kennedy, PsyD, LAC, LMFT, LPC, RN, ACS, is the Training Director for the Noeticus Center for Professional Development™ (NCPD) and an approved Colorado Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) Addiction Counselor Trainer. Additionally, Dr. Kennedy is a Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Registered Nurse (RN), Certified Addiction Counselor, Level III (CACIII), Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP), Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS). He has been a psychotherapist since 1993 and a counselor educator and clinical supervisor since 1996, serving as core faculty at Naropa University in the Graduate School of Counseling and Psychology and as adjunct faculty at the University of Colorado Denver, Regis University, Prescott College, and Front Range Community College. Dr. Kennedy's clinical training is in the areas of trauma and dissociative disorders, chronic and persistent mental illness, psychiatric nursing and psychopharmacology, addictions and recovery, domestic/family violence, and living with life-threatening illnesses.
