Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Training
This highly interactive 2-day online training will keep you engaged from beginning to end! These 2 days will provide participants the concepts and skills needed to learn, understand, and implement Motivational Interviewing (MI). After this training, participants will have a strong, evidence-based foundation in MI and will be prepared to continue a learning process for developing competence and proficiency.
Access the training and material from the comfort of your home or office! This training will be taught 100% online and can be accessed with your personal computer or mobile device. As this training will be highly dynamic with a lot of opportunity to practice, participants will be required to use video camera and microphone.
Who should attend?
This training is designed for anyone who wishes to learn and develop their skills in supporting people who are considering making a behavior change. The evidence-based behind MI has become increasingly strong in the last decades, expanding into practically any field in which a person in considering making a behavior change. This training is appropriate for helping professionals who are working with clients to make physical, mental, and other positive health behavior changes: educators, physicians, health educators, life coaches, mental health providers, corrections officers, dentists, social workers, dieticians, care managers, nurses, consultants, community workers, peer recovery coaches, etc.
About the Trainer(s)
Yadira Benjelloun is MINT-Certified Trainer of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and founder and MI consultant of the Compassionate Ear. Yadira holds an MS in Educational Counseling and works as Spanish bilingual Senior Learning Consultant/Trainer for Southern California Kaiser Permanente. She designs and delivers trainings for clinicians and physicians across Southern California. Her caring and genuine training style provides a safe space to promote an inclusive and supportive learning environment to all participants.
Patricia Juarez has a Master’s in Clinical Psychology and is the Trainer Director of a Research & Training Center, at the Psychology Department, at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she designs and offers bilingual training and supervision in Motivational Interviewing (MI), Brief Motivational Interventions (BMI) and Culturally-Centered BMI. She is a Certified Trainer by, and member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). She has facilitated trainings with professionals and providers in health, behavioral health, legal and educational settings; primarily addressing alcohol and substance use, other health and behavioral health related behaviors, as well as medication, program and treatment compliance. She also teaches at the Psychology Department of the Autonomous University of Juarez, in Juarez, México, which has provided her with the opportunity to work with Latino populations in both sides of this unique U.S.-Mexico border.
Reyna Puentes is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and works as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate in a non-profit mental health counseling center in El Paso, Texas. She also works in the Department of Psychology within the University of Texas at El Paso, where she develops and provides Motivational Interviewing training in English and Spanish to organizations, including peer support recovery services, family and protective services, juvenile and adult probation, community mental and health care service workers, and more. She is experienced in coding and providing feedback and supervision in MI and brings an energetic and passionate spirit to MI trainings.
Training Objectives
These three dynamic trainers will introduce this evidenced-based method of communication through a variety of experiential exercises, didactic presentation, dyad work, demonstration, small group discussions, and modeling of skills and concepts. Participants will experience both the spirit and the skills of Motivational Interviewing in a friendly and fun virtual space.
1. Refrain from “traditional,” unproductive, persuasive approaches
2. Use the MI Spirit (PACE) to establish a collaborative and empathic working relationship
3. Use the Engaging process to create a safe space for a conversation about change
4. Practice the core skills (OARS) to maintain engagement, empathy, and communicate PACE
5. Use the Focusing process to negotiate the agenda of the conversation and to share relevant
information, suggestions, or concerns
6. Recognize language in favor of change (Change Talk) as an indicator of personal motivation
and readiness to change
7. Use the Evoking process and the OARS skills to evoke and reinforce Change Talk, especially
key evocative questions and reflective listening
8. Use the Planning process to explore options and develop a plan for change, while addressing
ambivalence and increasing confidence

• One week prior to the training, participants will be emailed the ZOOM link to the training,
resource handouts, and materials.
