Description

Behavioral issues, such as medication non-adherence, unhealthy use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs (prescription/non-prescription), poor nutrition/over-eating, and sedentary lifestyle account for 70-80% of the overall burden of chronic illness, disability, and death in the United States and represent common barriers to optimal care in routine psychiatric as well as general medical practice. Healthcare practitioners routinely grapple with complex behavioral issues but rarely receive sufficient training in evidence-based communication strategies to address them. This course aims to provide psychiatrists, and other practitioners across medical specialties, with conceptual models and pragmatic skills to systemically address health behavior change complexities in routine practice. Specifically, the course will present an integrative stepped-care approach, starting with the eight core competencies of Brief Action Planning (BAP) and supplementing these skills, as needed, with focused applications of concepts and skills from the field of Motivational Interviewing (MI). From MI, the course will highlight: Spirit of MI; best practices concerning patient ambivalence; recognizing and responding to change and sustain talk; and how to utilize MI skills for patients not ready for action planning with BAP. BAP is a highly structured, pragmatic, and versatile MI-consistent tool to help people change and to support self-management for health.

This highly interactive course contains a self-paced learning experience and live learning experiences. Participants are expected to attend all live sessions to be eligible to claim CME or participation credit for the course.

Registrants for this course will be offered and encouraged to take an 8 CME-hour pre-course on Brief Action Planning (BAP) from the Stony Brook University Office of Continuing Medical Education. This Stony Brook course (usually $250) will be made available to registrants at the discounted price of $50 and will provide a useful springboard for the course on BAP-MI. Register at this link to receive special discounted rate https://cmicourse.com/online-courses/apa/
