~~This 12 hour course spread over 4 mornings, online, introduces the core principles of motivational interviewing and provides practice in the essential skills applied in a range of settings. Participants are welcome from any setting, for example, psychology, health, criminal justice, education and employment. Completion of this workshop is the foundation for later attendance at Steps 2 and 3 and completion of an assignment leading to the Advanced certificate. it can be completed as a standalone workshop for people who do not wish to move on to steps 2 and 3.
By the end of the course participants will be able to

Core Skills to express empathy (open questions, reflection, affirmation and summarising)
Sustain talk and discord. The art of rolling with resistance
Engaging the reluctant or non-verbal service user
Ambivalence, the decisional balance and stages of change
Motivation as a combination of importance and confidence
Building importance by developing awareness of discrepancy
Building self-efficacy (confidence)by focussing on strengths
Types of change talk at different stages in the process; recognising and building on it
Exchanging information without falling into the expert trap
