Motivational Interviewing Affirmation Starters and Values Card Sort for Youth and Young Adults

This document updates two foundational Motivational Interviewing (MI) methods for inspiring affirmations and exploring values in change conversations with young people. Think of exploring a person’s strengths, skills, abilities, values, efforts, culture, and past successes as wind powering the sailboat of change. The content presented here briefly summarizes the use of affirmations and values in MI practice, and may be used in training as well as in sessions with youth and young adults.
