Introduction to Motivational Interviewing: Level 1
A great MI start for anyone who has minimal or no prior MI training. Training will be useful to professionals in higher education, healthcare, social work, counseling or secondary education.
- Spirit of MI: what, why and how.
- 4 key skills for effectively engagement (OARS)
- Major roadblocks and how to avoid them (RULES)
- Diffusing defensiveness: What does research tell us?
- Reflections: strategic and simple
- Interactive practice opportunities to try it all out, using examples from healthcare, higher education and substance use treatment.
Participants will leave the training with a beginning level understanding about MI and identify their own interest in trying it out and learning more. Can be combined with the level 2 training for those preparing to work with the BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention) program on a higher education campus.
