Conversations about Change:  An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

This training provides an introduction to the concepts and skills of motivational interviewing (MI). Participants will receive an overview of MI and practice the application of skills. The session will cover MI basics and participants will learn best practices for giving advice, listening actively through reflection statements, and eliciting change talk in order to motivate clients. Participants will spend time discussing how to use these methods within their unique work or life setting. Because learning is at its best when the learner is highly engaged, this training includes a dynamic blend of lecture, observation, discussion, and interactive exercises to communicate ideas and practice skills. Participants will receive handouts to reinforce concepts learned.

Cost of registration INCLUDES: Handouts, Coffee, water, and light lunch.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the definition of Motivational Interviewing
  • Identify and exhibit the five foundational MI skills (OARS+I)
  • Recognize and respond effectively to client ambivalence
  • Recognize and describe the “MI Spirit”
  • Describe the four fundamental processes of MI
  • Improve active listening techniques through formulating deep reflection statements
  • Apply strategies to enhance client readiness when giving advice or information;
  • Identify “change talk” and “sustain talk”
  • Demonstrate beginning-level skills in eliciting and responding to “change talk” and “sustain talk”
  • Consider practical ideas and plans for integrating MI into their daily work
