Motivational Interviewing is a psychotherapeutic approach to helping clients create positive change in their lives by enhancing client motivation and resolving ambivalence. Often cited as a key component of trauma informed care and cultural humility, MI has a strong evidence base for use with a variety of behavioral change goals among a variety of helping roles and in a variety of settings. This skills lab is designed to bring participants’ MI skills to the next level by building on the basics and introducing advanced content. This course is fast-paced and assumes that participants have basic knowledge of MI Spirit, MI Skills, and MI Processes. Day one will include a brief review of MI basics with a heavy emphasis on applying and integrating concepts through group discussions, activities, and practice. Advanced MI skills will be introduced on day two, and this day will have a focus on learning through real plays, activities, and experimentation. At the end of this 2-day course, participants will be equipped with the information, knowledge, and understanding of steps needed to become a member of the prestigious Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). Note that this skills lab will include both Brown School degree-enrolled participants and practicing social workers who have chosen to join us for professional development credit. The expectations outlined in this syllabus apply to the degree-enrolled participants, who will receive a letter grade evaluation and academic credit for their work.
