Leaders and managers need to share information. It’s not optional and it’s not always subject to permission. It’s their responsibility. It’s a different need than we may be used to hearing, but it deserves the same respect as any need a client might bring.
We teach Ask-Offer-Ask (AOA) primarily as a tool for gaining consent before sharing information. That framing makes sense in a therapeutic context. For those in positions of authority, it sends an unintended message: that engaging with motivation is something that happens only when sharing information is optional. That’s a false choice that learners feel even when they can’t name it. It limits our reach and impact.
AOA is more capable than that framing suggests. This session will offer an expanded application of AOA that better reflects leaders’ and managers’ responsibilities. When we provide clearer pathways to sharing information while engaging with motivation, it strengthens their openness to MI and their experiences of its relevance to their daily work.
