About Me

Dr. Sylvie Naar is an Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Department of Behavioral Science and SOcial Medicine at Florida State University where she directs the Center for Translational Behavioral Science. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and has provided trainings locally, nationally, and internationally for over 15 years.  She is also a licensed pediatric psychologist.  Dr. Naar has had several federally funded projects utilizing Motivational Interviewing (MI) to improve health behaviors for many populations and delivered by many types of providers including medical providers, mental health providers, and paraprofessional staff.   She also has funded projects to study how to best teach MI and how to implement MI within organizations. She is an international expert on MI targeting HIV-related behaviros in young poeple Dr. Naar has worked closely with the developers of MI (Miller and Rollnick) to author the first textbook on the use of MI with adolescents and young adults (Motivational Interviewing with Adolescents and Young Adults) and a second text on combining MI and CBT for maximum effectiveness  She has experience in multi-site evaluation studies of complex, multi-level interventions for the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the Health Resources and Service Administration.  Dr. Naar has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.  She consultats with a non-profit training group, Behavior Change Consulting Institute.
