More About Me

About Me

I am a Motivational Interviewing trainer and coach with more than 13 years of experience in criminal justice, corrections, community supervision, and behavior-change interventions. My professional background includes serving as a probation officer, coordinating problem-solving courts, and working with justice-involved populations, including individuals with substance use and behavioral health needs and veterans transitioning back into the community.

I have used Motivational Interviewing extensively throughout my career in direct practice, coaching, multidisciplinary collaboration, and professional development. My training background also includes Motivational Interviewing training and coaching through EPIC, along with experience facilitating evidence-based interventions and working within treatment-oriented criminal justice settings.

My approach to MI training emphasizes both fidelity to the spirit and principles of Motivational Interviewing and practical application. I incorporate demonstration, experiential exercises, skill practice, feedback, and real-world scenarios to help participants translate MI concepts into effective conversations.

I am particularly passionate about supporting professionals in criminal justice, corrections, behavioral health, substance use treatment, and other helping professions. My goal is to help practitioners develop MI skills that strengthen engagement, reduce resistance, support autonomy, and help individuals identify their own motivation for meaningful and sustainable change.

Trainer Statement

My approach to Motivational Interviewing training is grounded in the belief that MI is best learned through experience, practice, and genuine conversation—not simply through presentation of concepts. I strive to create an engaging and supportive learning environment where participants feel comfortable practicing new skills, receiving feedback, asking questions, and even making mistakes.

I emphasize translating the spirit and principles of MI into practical skills that professionals can use immediately in their work. Through demonstrations, experiential exercises, real-world scenarios, and coaching, I help participants recognize their existing strengths while developing greater confidence and intentionality in their conversations.

My goal is not for participants to leave simply knowing more about Motivational Interviewing, but to communicate differently—listening more deeply, approaching ambivalence with curiosity, supporting autonomy, and helping people discover their own reasons for change. I want MI to feel less like a technique they are performing and more like a natural and meaningful way of engaging with others.
