I am a clinical psychologist and professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. I work at Harborview Medical Center, a Level I trauma center. I work with people who have sustained traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke. I also have experience in multiple sclerosis.
I started learning about MI in 1995 and completed a "Train the Trainers" workshop in 1998 in Santa Fe, NM. I specialize in clinical applications of MI, research, and training in medical, rehabilitation and disability populations. I have conducted or contributed to several randomized controlled trials of MI. I am particularly interested in delivering MI via telehealth and in using MI to promote physical activity and other types of health behavior change. I train rehabilitation professionals (PT, OT, speech pathologists, nurses, psychologists, social workers and vocational rehabilitation counselors) as well as physicians, and medical students.
