SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is a comprehensive, evidence-based practice approach to provide early intervention for persons with substance use, misuse disorders including marijuana and nicotine.

SBIRT is a simple, flexible and cost effective, efficient intervention in primary care, emergency departments, schools, wellness centers, and professional and community settings.

This training focuses on the spirit, skills and tools that helping professionals need to recognize and employ SBIRT.

The goal of the training is for participants: to learn to effectively encourage the people we serve to reduce or eliminate the problematic behavior of using/ misusing alcohol and other drugs and to demonstrate their ability to understand and implement the SBIRT model.

Motivational Interviewing skills, spirit and structure will be demonstrated and practiced through experiential exercises and multi modality methods.

This training will be fun as well as engaging.

At the end of this training the participants will be able to:

·      Identify purpose and value as a public health initiative

·      Accurately screen and identify risky alcohol and other drug use

·     Effectively deliver a brief intervention focused on utilizing motivational interviewing to increase awareness of the people we serve and to offer information regarding their substance use and misuse.

·    Employ brief motivational interviewing spirit, structure and techniques to facilitate the person’s own change talk.
