Mining for Change Talk: An Intermediate/Advanced Training in Motivational Interviewing

This 2-day intensive workshop is designed for individuals who have completed introductory MI training and who have practiced MI in an applied setting. Participants will be guided through a series of exercises progressing from an intermediate- to advanced-level of clinical skill. This workshop will include live demonstration, video demonstration, “real plays” and practice in small group exercises with coaching and feedback (during and after exercises).

Dr. Bethea-Walsh will also discuss:

  • Use of MI with special populations and cultural groups.
  • MI Fidelity Coding
  • Changes/additions to the MI Theory and Principles:
  • The 4 Processes of MI (Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, Planning)
  • "Dancing with Discord" (no longer "Rolling with Resistance")
  • Compassion as a part of the MI “Spirit”
  • Supporting individuals in making change (behaviors, attitudes, feelings, etc.)

Training Objectives:

  1. Identify the limitations of a confrontational helping style with ambivalent individuals or in response to relationship discord.
  2. Describe the 4 processes of MI.
  3. Identify change talk.
  4. Utilize 3 MI principles or interviewing skills to elicit and strengthen change talk.
  5. Utilize 3 MI principles or interviewing skills to roll with sustain talk and relationship discord.
  6. Observe and discuss videotaped demonstrations of MI.
  7. Practice MI interviewing skills with simulated clients.
  8. Rate interventionists’ MI fidelity.
  9. Practice rating transcripts with fidelity coding methods and procedures.
  10. Utilize 3 MI principles or interviewing skills to guide a conversation through the 4 processes of MI.
  11. Practice giving feedback to clinicians with a MI style.
  12. Develop a plan for how to integrate MI into clinical practice.

This workshop is located just outside Atlanta, Georgia.

Target Audience:

Helping professionals or paraprofessionals who counsel clients or patients in making change (i.e., Mental Health and Addictions Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Physicians, Nurses, Managers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Research Study Personnel, Probation/Corrections Officers and Counselors, Peer Recovery Support, Health/Life Coaches, Resident Assistants, Educators, Drug Court Providers, Pastoral Counselors, etc.).

Continuing Education:

**12.0 Core hours of continuing education:

  • Approved by the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia, LPCA (Related hours for LCSWs and LMFTs)
  • Approved by Georgia Psychological Association

Cost:

  • Professionals (CE credit): $395.00 (fee increases to $445.00 after May 11, 2018)
  • Professionals (Non-CE credit): $350.00 (fee increases to $400.00 after May 11, 2018)
  • Student Rate: $200.00 (fee increases to $250.00 after May 11, 2018).  Proof of current student status must be submitted with payment.

Refund Policy:

If you cancel prior to May 11, 2018, you will receive a refund of money minus a $100.00 processing fee.  Non-refundable thereafter.
