Motivational Interviewing and Ethical Considerations
**NEW Continuing Education approvals!
Instructor:
Angela R. Bethea-Walsh, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Member, Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers
This one-day workshop is designed for individuals who have had minimal to moderate exposure to Motivational Interviewing (MI), and who are interested in learning more about effective MI practice and the ethics of MI use.
Dr. Bethea-Walsh proposes to present the underlying “Spirit” and principles of MI. Participants will be guided through exercises including live demonstration, video demonstration, and practice in small group exercises. These exercises are designed to help participants have “a taste” of MI interventions in contrast to more confrontational helping styles. Participants will practice methods to decrease ambivalent individuals’ arguments against change and to increase intrinsic motivation to change.
Three hours of workshop time will be devoted to ethical issues in MI practice. Dr. Bethea-Walsh will discuss when using MI is indicated, counseling with neutrality, the 4 broad ethical values (autonomy, maleficence, beneficence, and justice), and how these have implications for MI practice in specific clinical situations (i.e., mandated treatment programs, crisis assessment/hospitalization, working with offenders).
Dr. Bethea-Walsh will also discuss other ethical standards (i.e., use of MI when assessing clients’ suicidal ideation) and discuss when it is not appropriate to use MI (i.e., when the helper has a personal investment in the outcome). Reference will be given to different ethics codes and supervision guidelines (i.e., Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, etc.). The training will include case studies to explore how MI might be used in an ethical manner to support the individual to change in alignment with his/her own values and goals.
