Abstract | (from the chapter) Substance misuse in older adults is a growing problem with enormous costs to individuals and society. The majority of older adults with problems related to substance use present in settings other than addiction treatment centers; in those settings it seems likely that many will be in the precontemplation or contemplation stage regarding the need to change behaviors. Health care and social service professionals must be alert to potential problems and be equipped to intervene when problems are identified.
