Abstract | Describes a method, based on the principles of negotiation and motivational interviewing, to facilitate clinical negotiation with diabetic patients. The 7 principles of the method incorporate patient centeredness, an assessment of readiness to change and some elements of motivational interviewing. Based on these principles, a pack was developed, containing an agenda-setting-chart, a readiness-to-change ruler, and 2 visual aids. The agenda-setting-chart provides visual options for easy discussion and priority setting, whereas the readiness-to-change ruler provides means to define ambivalent attitudes. Training was given to practitioners on the method, who had agreed for their practices to be randomized and be entered into the innovation arm of the trial. It is concluded that the method values people's right to make informed choices that will influence the care process & the personal outcome.
