Abstract | (from the chapter) The current investigation examined motivational interviewing as a pregroup preparatory intervention for partner-violent men. The goals of the motivational interview intervention were to increase readiness to change abusive behavior, to facilitate additional help seeking, to promote cooperative and constructive behavior during subsequent group cognitive behavioral treatment sessions, and to enhance involvement in treatment as indicated by cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) session attendance, the collaborative working alliance between group therapists and the clients, and compliance with CBT homework tasks. Effects on abusive behavior outcomes after group CBT were also explored. The design compared an intake procedure that included two sessions of MI (Miller & Rollnick, 1991) to a standard intake procedure consisting of structured interviewing only.
