Abstract | Motivational interviewing (MI) is a combination of both traditional and innovative methods. MI is traditional in that it relies on therapeutic concepts such as unconditional positive regard and has been hypothesized to represent an expert use of cognitive dissonance theory. Prominently cited and traditional clinical concepts reflected in MI include the importance of empathy in the development of a therapeutic relationship and the need to tailor assessment and treatment to each client. This chapter reviews the intrinsic assumptions of Mi and the core tasks and skills involved and briefly considers the literature examining a variety of applications.
