This introductory level course is helpful for any helping professional, including therapists, social workers, case managers, peer support, coaches,  and those working in healthcare substance misuse, criminal justice, education, and more.

 

You will learn how to:

-Identify the theoretical basis, history, and research basis of MI

-Apply the MI spirit with clients: compassion, autonomy, evoking, and collaboration

-List 3 Styles of Communication, Stages of Change, and guiding principles of MI

-Identify the Righting Reflex & Roadblocks to communication, & apply methods for working with clients in Precontemplation stage

-Demonstrate MI core communication skills (OARS: Open Ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries)

-OARS: Identify the differences between simple and complex reflections, demonstrate 7 types of complex reflections, and apply guiding with reflections to client conversations

-OARS: Analyze the differences between Affirming and praise, and apply methods of Affirmations with various client scenarios

-OARS: Explain the differences between Open and Close-ended questions, & create effective Summaries that consolidate and guide client conversation

-Describe and apply skills in each of the 4 process of MI: Engagement, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning
