This course is designed to help human services, education and healthcare professionals become more proficient and natural at Motivational Interviewing (MI) and is based on the new MI processes introduced in 2012. We will focus on the advanced concepts around MI spirit and principles, complex reflections, evoking change talk, and enhancing confidence and consolidating commitment. Topics include: recent MI developments and effective learning models; approaching patients/clients with a spirit of empowerment, empathy, and evocation; adherence to MI in responses to sustain talk and discord; evoking and selectively reinforcing change talk, confidence talk, and commitment language; moving forward with goal-setting; and development of client action plans Prerequisite: Motivational Interviewing: Introductory training or equivalent (two-three days of MI clinical skills training with practice).
