MI for Victim Advocates
Victim advocates work every day with people who feel ambivalent, overwhelmed, fearful, or unsure about their next steps. Traditional helping strategies such as educating, persuading, or problem-solving can unintentionally create disconnection or leave advocates feeling stuck. Motivational Interviewing (MI) offers a different, more collaborative approach. This 6-hour, skills-based training is specifically designed for victim advocates and complements the themes of the NOVA Conference by centering survivor autonomy, ethical engagement, and trauma-responsive communication. MI is an evidence-based, client-centered method that helps advocates strengthen motivation for change while honoring safety, self-determination, and lived experience.
*NOTE: This is open to the public. Participants do NOT need to register for the NOVA conference taking place that week.
