Motivational Interviewing for Native Healing & Resilience: Decolonial, Trauma-Informed Indigenous-Centered Practice
This workshop explores the integration of Indigenous centered, trauma-informed training principles with Motivational Interviewing (MI) through a decolonial lens. Grounded in the presenter’s lived experience as a lineal descendant of the Yakama Nation (present-day central Washington State, USA), the session invites participants to implement and grow in strategies for fostering trust and working with communities particularly impacted by trauma rooted in colonization, displacement, and systemic oppression. We will explore impacts of historical and intergenerational trauma across Indigenous and colonized communities globally, including the roles of unresolved grief, cultural disruption, and ambivalence. We will also look at MI centered practices for fostering trust, collaboration, and psychological safety while actively working to avoid re-traumatization in intergroup clinical experiences with people most impacted by global colonization.
