Substance abuse and dependency

(from the chapter) In this chapter, we show how second-order change is woven through empirically supported treatments for substance abuse (addiction). From there, we review the historical underpinnings of treatment and contrast these with a current understanding of what works in alcohol and other drug problems (AOD). A case will be made that the addictions field is in the process of undergoing a second-order change and that clinicians need to go through a second-order change to keep up with the changing field. We then look more specifically at the stages-of-change model, motivational interviewing, and 12-step approaches that are modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
