Abstract

The eating disorders--anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and related disorders (eating disorders not otherwise specified [EDNOS] and binge-eating disorder [BED])--are quite prevalent disorders that affect mainly young women. In this chapter, while we will consider the use of motivational techniques in the management of different eating disorders, the main emphasis will be on AN. We have chosen to focus on AN because people with this disorder are typically less ready to change than people with other eating disorders, such as BN or BED.
