Abstract | (from the chapter) Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical style that is "a person-centered goal-oriented approach for facilitating change through exploring and resolving ambivalence" (Miller, 2006a, p. 138). Ambivalence is central to the philosophy and practice of MI. It is discrepancy, between a counselee's behaviors and how he or she wants to be, that is elicited and reinforced in the direction of change. Motivational interviewing has good evidence for effectiveness, and training in the style can potentially improve outcomes in a range of treatment contexts.
