Abstract | Replies to the comments made by J. M. J. Withers (see record 1998-04654-002) and M. Seager (see record 1998-04654-003) concerning the article by W. R. Miller (see record 1995-10478-001) concerning the ethics of motivational intervention. It is difficult to render ethical judgments regarding a method apart from the goals and contexts within which it is to be applied. A clearer and transtheoretical understanding of the mechanisms underlying the efficacy of motivational interviewing may better inform future discussions of these ethical concerns that pertain to psychotherapy more generally.
