Abstract

This paper attempts to take an initial step in providing an empirical framework for treating sexual compulsivity and addiction. The theoretical bases and technical applications of Motivational Interviewing (MI) are discussed within the context of treating individuals with sexual compulsivity and addiction. Particular emphasis is placed on using Motivational Interviewing to form a strong therapeutic alliance and generate behavioral change. Case studies from our clinical experience are also provided to demonstrate the application of specific motivational interviewing techniques. The paper concludes with suggestions for advancing the state of empirical research in the field of sexual compulsivity and addiction.
