The concept of MI in a leadership and organizational context has been growing in terms of interest and dissemination. The MILO (Motivational Interviewing in Leadership and Organizations) approach offers practical applications of MI adherent concepts and skills as a leader in an organization.

Through the MILO community we hope to share ideas, knowledge, and experience around Motivational Interviewing in Leadership and Organizations and thereby provide professionals around the world with pioneering insights and best practices to help lead themselves and their organizations more effectively and to make a positive impact.

Supervisors in organizations take on the responsibility to support and develop staff members. Staff development is inextricably tied to change and transformation. MI provides an improved path to successful supervisor/staff relationships. In turn, improved supervisor/staff relationships tend to lead to higher morale and positive workplaces.

This workshop will provide opportunities to learn and practice skills that translate foundational MI concepts into leadership and staff development.

Learning goals:

1.  Make the case for implementing MI in leadership and organizational contexts.

2.  Demonstrate the connection between the Behavior Change Model (Prochaska and DiClemente) to MI in the workplace.

3.  Review the foundational elements of MI as they relate and support leaders and staff development.

4.  Identify how to integrate Psychological Safety into MI practice in the workplace.

5.  Explore the ethics of practicing MI in the leadership.

Practice three applications of MI in leadership.

Presenters:

Jillian J. Gonzales, MA is a seasoned organization development professional with a focus on change and transformation. As a founding member of the International group, MILO (Motivational Interviewing in Leadership and Organizations) she continually integrates MI into all aspects of her coaching, training and consulting practices.

Since her first Motivational Interviewing training in 2012, Jillian knew that the concepts and Spirit of MI could be applied within Human Resources, leadership development and organizational development. She became a MINT member in October 2018.

Jillian is a native New Mexican who has spent the last 15 years working in diverse workplaces as a consultant, trainer and coach. She and her husband currently live in her home town where they are being raised by two daughters and two fur babies.

Greg Sumpter, PhD, is a juvenile justice professional with over 25 years of public service with youth and families. Greg Sumpter’s doctoral work was in a Leadership Studies program, and his dissertation focus was on using Motivational Interviewing in a leadership context.  He has been working in a leadership role for the last 13 years.

With initial exposure to MI in 2007, Greg saw the power in guiding people to come up with their own solutions. Greg became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2010, and noticed particularly with implementation of any new concept including MI, that a parallel process where supervisors practiced what they preached was important.  Greg is also a founding member of MILO.

With his home in Texas and his heart in Arkansas, Greg is preparing for life after teenagers, with two boys (17 & 18) growing up fast.  He enjoys reading, sports, and all kinds of film and music.
