Advanced Online K. Watson Victim Advocates

Advanced Motivational Interviewing for Victim Advocates is a skills-focused workshop designed for advocates who already have a foundation in MI and want to deepen their practice in complex, emotionally charged situations. This training moves beyond the basics to explore how MI can be used when clients feel stuck, ambivalent, overwhelmed, resistant, or impacted by trauma, shame, and fear. Participants will examine how the righting reflex, power dynamics, and urgency can subtly show up in advocacy work—and how MI helps advocates stay grounded, collaborative, and client-centered.

Through interactive exercises, real-world advocacy scenarios, and guided practice, advocates will refine advanced skills such as eliciting and responding to change talk, working skillfully with sustain talk, and using reflections strategically to deepen insight and motivation. Special attention is given to applying MI within ethical advocacy roles, honoring autonomy, and supporting survivors without pushing, fixing, or persuading. This workshop is ideal for experienced advocates who want to strengthen their confidence, presence, and effectiveness while staying aligned with trauma-informed and empowerment-based principles.
