Advanced MI (Virtual)
Description of Course:
Advanced Motivational Interviewing is an intensive skill-building session. Participants are expected to arrive prepared to practice the skills that were learned in the introductory level training. If you are already comfortable with the following concepts, you are probably ready for the advanced level: Ambivalence, Change Talk and Sustain Talk, Righting Reflex, Spirit of MI, OARS skills. During this workshop, participants will learn how the concepts listed above fit into the “Four Tasks” model, which was introduced to Motivational Interviewing beginning in 2013 (Miller and Rollnick, 2013). A lengthy amount of time is also dedicated to exploring (and reimagining) the traditional concept of resistance (more recently understood as discord). .
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate ability to evoke change talk
- List 7 types of change talk
- Define discord
- Demonstrate how to navigate a conversation through the four tasks: engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning.

60 minutes: Review Introductory Skills
60 minutes: 7 Types of Change Talk
90 minutes: 4 Processes of MI
90 minutes: Intensive Practice
5 hours of training + 1 hour for lunch break= 6 hours
