The concept and value of hope in the therapeutic process has been part of MI since the very beginning. Over the years, this concept has expanded through research, philosophical, social justice, and spiritual development, and MI practice. It is now part of our way of being and way of doing in MI. Miller and Moyers offer hope as one of eight clinical skills shown to be effective in improving client outcomes. This workshop will provide the rationale and support for a focus on hope in clinical work. We will engage in an experiential practice designed to develop awareness of the practitioner’s own wellspring of hope, where it lives, how it is nourished, and how it is expressed in practice. We will explore and practice strategies for integrating hope in MI practice.

Denise Ernst, Ph.D., is a Psychologist and Motivational Interviewing Trainer and Consultant. She is part of the research team that developed the Motivational Interviewing Skill Code (MISC) and the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Coding system. (MITI). She is an adjunct professor at the Portland State School of Social Work.
