Abstract | (from the chapter) Working in pediatric settings, for both physical and mental health, can present unique challenges to the clinician. Children and adolescents often require complex interventions to provide the necessary comprehensive and developmentally sensitive treatment. Brief interventions are particularly useful in working with youths with behavioral, developmental, or social problems. Among the brief interventions, Motivational Interviewing is often used (Dunn et al. 2001; Erickson et al. 2005). Motivational Interviewing was developed by Miller and Rollnick (1991, 2002) and its utility has been well described in the treatment of a wide group of disorders in adults, primarily substance abuse and dependence (Miller and Rollnick 2002).
