My name is Peter Rives. I am an MSW, LCSWA, LCASA and I live and work in Winston-Salem, NC, USA. I have been trained in Motivational interviewing (MI) for over 18 years and have been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) for the past 8 years. As a trainer, I have worked with clinicians, students, faculty, university staff, paraprofessionals, social workers, and medical and public health professionals. I have provided MI training all over the US, in-person and virtually, at Universities, Area Health Education Centers, behavioral health, and public health agencies, have delivered MI as a practitioner in clinical and research settings, and have presented at national conferences on the use of MI. I am a therapist in a private practice serving people who are experiencing challenges related to their mental health and/or substance use, and am the owner of Helpfuler, LLC where I serve as a consultant in Motivational Interviewing, harm-reduction and prevention, and integrated care.
I am passionate about sharing MI with people in a collaborative and participatory way.
I believe strongly in the need for ongoing practice and feedback to strengthen MI skill and develop fluency.
I have a particular interest in the application of MI outside of the traditional clinical setting, across all domains of an organization to increase the level of compassion, collaboration and effective engagement of organizations both internally and with external partners/customers.
