Intermediate Motivational Interviewing Workshop for the Healthcare Provider

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence based practice to help people make behavior changes, suitable for many settings including: Healthcare; Health Education; Mental Health; Substance Abuse

Course Content: This hands-on, one-day workshop is designed for learners who have completed an Introductory MI training and / or who have had baseline exposure and experience in MI. This training includes intermediate applications of practical MI techniques to faciliate behavior change in a variety of settings, with a focus on MI in healthcare settings.

Participants will:

  • review core concepts and principles of MI, including ambivalance, change talk and sustain talk; 
  • further develop more advanced skills of complex reflections and strategies for eliciting change talk; 
  • practice ways to minimize patient discord and enhance readiness to change;
  • focus on skills and strategies you can immediately put into use in your setting.


Who should attend: Physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers, care partners, physician assistants, nurses, trainees, substance abuse counselors, mental health workers, and any other practitioner who cares for patients and is interested in learning how to have more effective conversations about behavior change.

Course Credit: Signed certificate of completion for 7.0 contact hours of training.

Parking and Location: The training will be held in the Garden Hall at beautiful, historic Maymont in Richmond, VA.
