More About Me

About Me

I began my journey with MI as an SBIRT Educator for Medical Residents (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral toTreatment) through a SAMHSA grant to Kettering Medical Center, Kettering, Ohio.  I created the curriculum to train internal medicine M.D.'s and D.O.'s, as well as Psychiatric Residents through the Kettering Health Network - and conducted training rotations comprised of didactics, experiential components, and bedside trainingsin the hospital and clinic settings.  These trainings also extended to other allied health professionals, including nurses, social workers, clergy, judicial personnel, etc.  I also created and conducted introductory and higher level MI trainings in various locations across the United States.  Trainings ranged from short overviews to 3-day trainings.  From this position at Kettering Hospital, I next moved to a tenure-track Professor Position with the Human Services and Behavioral Health Department at Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio, which supports both mental health and a chemical dependency degree programs.  I have incorporated MI into many of our HSBH department's core courses, and am currently working to create a full 3 credit hour MI course as a Mental Health Course that will be open to all college students and members of the community, regardless of involvement in a degree program or not.  I am also currently collaborating with another department chair to create a Lifestyle Wellness Coaching Certificate Program for our college, which is based in a Motivational Interviewing foundation.  I am certified as a Lifestyle Wellness Coach for Weight Management, and a Certified Smoking Cessation Specialist, all of which I utilize MI as the foundation of my interventions/collaborations.  I have conducted and continue to offer trainings at the community, state, and national levels.  I have significant experience in SBIRT, and was the facilitator of a committee in Washington, D.C., comprised of SAMHSA SBIRT grantees, that worked on creating a foundation for a national medical school curriculum of SBIRT based in Motivational Interviewing.  I co-authored an article on Motivational Interviewing that was published in a professional, peer-reviewed Medical Journal in the United States.  I am available for MI trainings and consultations, as well as trainings and consultations utilizing the SBIRT approach, strongly based in Motivational Interviewing.
