I am an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences and Biostatistics/Epidemiology in the Department of Clinical Medicine at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in St. Maarten, Netherland Antilles (Dutch West Indies). I teach the Biostatistics/Epidemiology course, as well as a variety of subjects in Behavioral Sciences, including substance use, eating disorders, social determinants of health, and patient communication. I also teach Introduction to Motivational Interviewing to medical school students.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the US state of Texas (#62198). I have conducted Motivational Interviewing with a variety of populations to impact a number of behavioral outcomes, including outpatient substance users (to reduce cocaine, alcohol, and heroin use), veterans (to encourage adherence to colorectal cancer screening guidelines), and parents of babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to reduce environmental tobacco smoke in NICU infants’ homes. I look forward to working with a variety of groups to train service staff to help clients and patients reduce high-risk behaviors, such as substance use, and increase healthier behaviors.
