Description:
This virtual workshop is designed for individuals who have completed introductory Motivational Interviewing (MI) training and who have practiced MI in an applied setting. Zoom HIPAA-compliant videoconferencing will be used to guide participants through a series of intermediate-level exercises designed to practice strategic and effective ways to cultivate change language and motivation with individuals engaging in problematic substance use. This workshop will include video demonstration and live demonstration of MI methods.

Training Objectives:

  1. Identify change talk.
  2. Utilize 3 MI principles or interviewing skills to elicit change talk from individuals presenting with problematic substance use.
  3. Observe and discuss demonstrations of MI.
  4. Develop a plan for how to integrate MI into clinical practice.

Target Audience:
Helping professionals or paraprofessionals who counsel clients or patients in making change (i.e., Mental Health and Addictions Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Physicians, Nurses, Managers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Research Study Personnel, Probation/Corrections Officers and Counselors, Peer Recovery Support, Health/Life Coaches, Resident Assistants, Educators, Behavioral Specialists, Drug Court Providers, Pastoral Counselors, etc.).

Angela R. Bethea-Walsh, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia. She has provided substance use treatment for over 15 years, including therapy and brief interventions. She also conducts substance use evaluations, brief interventions, and therapy to treat collegiate and professional athletes' substance use. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an international organization of trainers in Motivational Interviewing (MI) started in 1997 by a small group of trainers trained by William R. Miller, Ph.D., and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D.
